Move from Slack,
DMs and all

Upload the export ZIP you got from Slack to Modak, and channels, messages, reactions, and attachments come in as they are. Whether DMs come in depends on your Slack plan and the type of export. First, check the table in step 1 to see which export your company can get.

Exports your company can get

Only a Slack admin (workspace owner) can do a Slack export. What it includes depends on your plan.

Good to know

  • You can move just public channels first — when you get a ZIP with DMs later, upload it to the same workspace again. Messages already imported are skipped, and only the missing ones are added.
  • 「DM with yourself」 (notes you leave for yourself) counts as a DM too. It only comes in if the export includes private channels and DMs.

Slack admin does itBusiness+

Admin exports everything, including DMs, at once

On the Business+ plan, the default export only includes public channels. To get private channels and DMs too, you need to request a full export from Slack. Once you get it, you can move all of your company's conversations at once, which is the cleanest way.

ARequest a full export

  1. In Slack, open Admin on the left → Workspace settings → Security → Import/Export data → the Export tab.
  2. Use the "submit an application" link on the screen to request a full export.
  3. The workspace Primary Owner approves it, and you'll get an email once the Slack support team finishes their review.
It takes some time — Slack reviews the request. While you wait, move just the public channels first, then upload the full ZIP again once it's approved (only what's missing is added, with no duplicates).

BExporting after approval

  1. In the same Export tab, choose the period to export. If it's your first time, choose All time.
  2. Click 「Start export」 and you'll get an email when it's ready.
  3. Get the ZIP from the link in the email. Don't unzip it — leave it as it is.
If the ZIP is bigger than 300MB, split the export by period (for example, one year at a time) and upload the files one by one. Overlapping periods won't create duplicates.

EnterpriseSeparate for each person

Each person exports their own DMs

If it's hard to get the whole company at once, you can export just one person's conversations and upload them one by one. Their channels, DMs, and group DMs come in.

AGet an export for each person

  1. A Slack Org admin goes to Tools & settings → Organization settings → Security → Export and picks one member to export.
  2. Both JSON and TXT formats work. If you can choose, JSON carries over more (original threads and attachments).
  3. Pass the ZIP you received on to that person. Repeat this once for each person.
Regular Slack members can't export on their own. Ask an admin for "Export my conversations."
If you exported as TXT — messages and reactions come in, but Slack leaves some things out. Threads are flattened into channel messages, and attachments come in only for files shared in DMs and group DMs plus files you uploaded yourself. Files other people uploaded in channels aren't included in Slack's TXT export, so those messages only get a note saying the file couldn't be moved. People's emails aren't included, so other people show up by their Slack ID — an admin can merge them into real accounts under Workspace settings › Import in 「Accounts that look like the same person」.

Upload to Modak

AFirst move — to a new workspace

  1. At the bottom left of Modak, tap your photo → "Move from Slack". (On a phone: your photo → "Move from Slack")
  2. Click 「Upload Slack export ZIP」 and choose the ZIP you downloaded.
  3. When you scroll up, the latest messages load first so you can write right away. Older messages and attachments keep loading in the background.

BAdding to a workspace you've already moved — DM ZIP·per-person ZIP

  1. Under the same window, tap "Add to this workspace instead of a new one".
  2. Upload a ZIP that contains DMs, or a per-person ZIP. You can upload one for each person.
  3. Anything that already exists is skipped, and only the DMs and posts that weren't there are added.

How it comes in

  • Private channels stay private — They're only visible to people who were original members.
  • DMs are between two people only — once a teammate joins Modak and signs in to their own spot (Slack account), their DMs appear.
  • DM with yourself — it appears as 「Chat with yourself」 in the sidebar DM list.
  • Group DMs — they come in as private channels named after the people in them (for example, 「Gildong-Cheolsu-Younghee」).

Stuck?

I can't see any DMs
The ZIP you received is most likely a default export with public channels only. Check the table in step 1, get an export that includes private channels and DMs, and upload it to the same workspace again.
"Couldn't find channels or messages to import" appears
Upload the ZIP from Slack as it is, without unzipping it. If it still looks the same, let us know with 「Report a bug」 in the app — we'll check what format it is.
The names of my DM with myself or group DMs I uploaded earlier look wrong
ZIP files uploaded before October 6 are missing your DM with yourself, and group DMs came in with English IDs. Upload the same ZIP again and only the missing parts are added and the names are fixed.
